How many verb tenses are there in English?
- Continuous or progressive aspect
- the actions are still happening at the time of reference
- simple aspect
- the basic form of the past, present, and future tense
- The point of aspects is that they tell you, as of that moment, the status of the action
- give 12 possibilities in English
- There are variations in each language
- can be used to clarify ideas in a sentence that's already festooned with commas
- also links independent clauses
- when connected by semicolons, the two sentences look and sound better because they are related in some way
- 2 main rules
- unless they are being used in lists, semicolons should only connect clauses that are related in some way
- You will almost never find a semicolon willingly stationed before coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for, nor, so, and yet)
- semicolon can replace the conjunction to shorten a sentence
- can be used in three ways
- to mark possessions
- when showing possession, the apostrophe belongs next to the noun that owns or possesses something
- to mark contractions
- to mark the plural of single letters
